Rebuilding Hope – All Hands Volunteers, Nepal

On 25 April 2015, Nepal was struck by an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.8 Mw followed by numerous aftershocks in the coming months which caused devastation in much of the country. Nearly 800,000 homes were destroyed or damaged, along with some 30,000 classrooms, rural roads, businesses, and heritage sites. Within 72 hours, American based humanitarian response NGO All Hands Volunteers were in the region to provide crisis relief at the front line.20160305 All Hands Low Res-35.jpg

Nepal is amongst the poorest country in South Asia. The people in the mountain regions of Nuwakot and Sindhupalchok especially, where in some cases almost 95 per cent of all houses were destroyed, have little or no money to make a new beginning. Almost one year on, the aftermath of that disaster continues to be felt by thousands of Nepalis who are still living in tents and sub standard temporary shelters, with extremely limited facilities.

To date, teams of committed volunteers at All Hands provide hands on relief 6 days a week assisting with demolition of unsafe damaged buildings; rubble removal; and reconstruction of schools amongst others in remote geographical operating environment that are rugged and largely inaccessible by vehicles.
